The copy editor's job is to make the text clear, correct, concise, complete, and consistent. Typically, copy editing involves correcting spelling, punctuation, grammar, terminology, jargon, and semantics, and ensuring that the text adheres to the publisher's style or an external style guide. A copy editor may shorten the text, to improve it or to fit length limits. Copy editors are expected to ensure that the text flows, and that it is sensible, fair, and accurate. If a passage is unclear or an assertion seems questionable, the copy editor may ask the writer to clarify it.
Although proofreading is distinct from copy editing, it is a task that is often performed by copy editors. Traditionally, a proofreader looks at a copy of a text, compares it to an original version, and then marks any errors. However, with the advent of word-processing software, proofreading has come to mean "minimal copy editing", involving only the correction of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
